How to Use Instagram Location Tags to Reach More Local Customers

July 9, 2026

As you might know, our team at Radiant is fully remote, so I’m usually writing this email from a different city every few weeks. One day it’s Arizona, the next it’s Rhode Island, and sometimes it’s halfway across the world.

Traveling full time has made me pay much closer attention to how location impacts social media reach, and it’s a strategy more local businesses should be using.

Get more local reach by being more specific

THE BIG DOSE

One of the easiest social media wins I see businesses miss is location tagging.

Instead of tagging your city, tag the actual location where your content was filmed.

For example, if your team grabs coffee before a meeting and films a Reel there, tag the coffee shop, not just “Tucson, Arizona.” If you’re attending a networking event, tag the venue. Shooting content at a local park? Tag the park.

Why? Location tags help Instagram understand exactly where your content belongs, making it eligible to appear on that location’s page and in searches from people interested in that specific place. Accurate, detailed location tags are a stronger discovery signal than broad city tags alone.

It’s a small change, but when you’re trying to reach new customers in your community, those details can make a real difference!

  • Instagram is continuing to prioritize original content. Original photos, carousels, and creator-owned content are being favored over reposts, making now a great time to invest in unique content instead of recycling or repurposing.
