The Internet is constantly changing. And that includes social networks.  It can be tempting to create an account on every social platform. But does your business really need to be on every single one? No.

Is Your Audience There?

This is a question you need to consider before taking any and all marketing action. If your audience isn’t on that social platform, or at that networking event, or in any other situation, DO NOT waste your time.

Businesses benefit from a social media presence because they get a unique opportunity to interact directly with their audience. But if your audience isn’t going to be there, what good is it doing for your business?

You might be thinking, what do you mean “is my audience there? My audience is all over the Internet.” While that might be true to some extent, your target audience will mainly exist on specific platforms. For example, if your audience is made up of established professionals, you’ll want to spend more time on LinkedIn than other social media platforms. But if you’re targeting millennials, Instagram is the place to be.

Really think about where your target audience exists in the social media world. If they’re not going to be on this new platform, don’t bother creating a social media account.

Do You Have the Time for a New Social Media Account?

There’s no getting around it, being on social media can be time consuming. Not only do you have to dedicate time and energy into creating the content you’re going to publish, but you also have to put time into engaging with your audience.

If you don’t have enough time to dedicate to another social profile, you shouldn’t create one. No presence on that social network will look a lot better than a poorly managed profile. If you create a social media account for your business and don’t maintain it, users will still find it and try to connect with you. When you aren’t connecting back, that will leave a negative impression of your business.

Do You Have the Budget?

Posting on social media every day and engaging with your audience will only get you so far. You will have to invest some money into social media advertising to see the results you’re looking for. If you don’t have the extra dough to shell out to properly manage another social media account, it might not be worth your time to create and manage one.

If you answered yes to all three of these questions, congratulations! It sounds like you’ve found a platform that will be worthwhile for your business. But if you answered no to any of these questions, it’s probably best that you stick to the social media marketing plan that you already have in place.
